Kyle Schneweis joined the Nebraska Department of Roads as Director on June 8, 2015, after his appointment by Governor Pete Ricketts. With a background in civil engineering, transportation policy, and private sector consulting, he brings a unique perspective to the Department.
Schneweis earned his civil engineering degree from the University of North Dakota. He began his career at the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). In his time at KDOT, he led the update of the state’s long-range transportation plan and staffed the governor’s Blue Ribbon Transportation Task Force. Schneweis was appointed Chief of Government Affairs where he helped shepherd the legislative passage of an $8.3 billion transportation program.
After a dozen years with KDOT, he joined High Street Consulting, a public policy firm out of Washington, D.C., where he assisted more than a dozen state DOT clients on a variety of strategic planning and policy initiatives.
As Director, Schneweis looks forward to traveling the state, getting to know NDOR staff and working together to shape the future of Nebraska’s transportation system. Schneweis wants to focus on the customer. He puts great emphasis on transparency, keeping customers involved and informed, and seeking out opportunities that will positively affect the economy. Schneweis believes in a team approach and empowering employees to help inform decisions.
Although he spent much of the last two decades in Kansas, he is not entirely unfamiliar with Nebraska. His wife, Laurel, grew up in Lincoln and he has visited the state many times. They have two toddler boys, Mazlo and Karver.
