Director Kyle Schneweis was appointed by Governor Pete Ricketts in June of 2015. As Director of the Nebraska Department of Roads he leads the Agency’s 2100 plus employees that are responsible for the planning, development, design, construction, maintenance and administration of the state highway system.
Schneweis brings a diverse background of public and private sector experience to the Department. He spent over 15 years in the civil engineering, transportation policy, and private sector consulting fields at local, state and federal levels.
After earning a civil engineering degree from the University of North Dakota, Schneweis began his professional career at the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). In his time at KDOT, he led the update of the state’s long-range transportation plan and staffed the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Transportation Task Force. Schneweis was appointed Chief of Government Affairs where he helped shepherd the legislative passage of an $8.3 billion transportation program.
After a dozen years with KDOT, Schneweis joined High Street Consulting, a public policy firm out of Washington, D.C., where he assisted more than a dozen state DOT clients on a variety of strategic planning and policy initiatives.
As Director, Schneweis focuses on identifying innovative ways to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the Department while improving customer service. He puts great emphasis on transparency, keeping customers involved and informed, and seeking out opportunities that will positively impact the economy and our Nebraska communities. Schneweis believes in a team approach and empowering employees to help inform decisions.
Schneweis and his wife, Laurel, live in Lincoln and are enjoying the opportunity to raise their toddler boys Mazlo and Karver in Laurel’s hometown.
